Solar dive watch · The standard since 1943

Combat divers wore it from WWII to the Gulf War. None of them ever stopped to charge it.

Every combat diver from WWII to the Gulf War wore the same type of watch underwater. The Trident 300 is built to that standard: 300 m, sapphire crystal, 316L steel, luminous hands and a backlight, solar charged by any light so it never goes dead on you. 45% off right now, and the offer won't be here long.

The mission

If you went underwater, you went blind.

For most of human history there was no timing, no depth reference, no way to know how long you'd been down. That changed in the 1940s. The first military dive watches were built for one mission: to give the men going into the water a fighting chance of coming back out.

  1. 01
World War II. The Underwater Demolition Teams.

They used the watch to time their breaches on enemy harbors. Precise. Silent. No margin for error. The watch had to work, because lives were timed to the second.

  2. 02
Korea. Then Vietnam. They went deeper.

In the Rung Sat the Navy SEALs took it through tidal swamps, saltwater and jungle rot. The watch survived everything the mission threw at it.

  3. 03
    Not luxury instruments. Tools.

Built to a specification that said: survive 200 m of pressure, survive saltwater corrosion, survive complete darkness, survive the mission.

  4. 04
    For decades, that standard held.

The dive watch was one of the most trusted pieces of equipment on a diver's wrist. Then the tech industry saw an opportunity.

And they called it progress

They convinced the world a wrist needed GPS, heart rate and notifications.

The tech industry saw an opportunity. What it built is fine on a treadmill. Here is what it does in the water, and what a dive watch built to the original standard does instead.

Six things the original standard asked for, and the published Trident 300 spec that answers each one.

This is a great watch, exactly what I expected, really strong lines and feels very sturdy on your arm. I actually feel this is a watch for any occasion because of how lovely the stainless steel bezel.

Questions, answered straight

Before you tap the button

Does it really never need charging?

There is no charging cable, and no battery swap every couple of years. The Trident 300 runs on Solar-Powered Japanese Quartz: light hitting the dial keeps it going. Daylight, a desk lamp, the cabin light. That is the whole routine. No caseback is opened to fit a new battery, so the watch stays the way it left the factory.

Is it a real 300 meter dive watch or just marketing?

300M (30 ATM / 1000 ft), Professional Dive Rating. That is the published spec, not an opinion. It is built with a unidirectional 60-minute bezel, luminous hands and markers plus a backlight, and a sapphire crystal with Anti-Reflective coating: the things a dive watch is for.

The original specification said 200 m. Why is this one rated 300?

The 200 m figure is the historical specification the first military dive watches were held to. The Trident 300 is rated to its own published spec: 300M (30 ATM / 1000 ft), Professional Dive Rating. More margin than those men had.

Is the history real?

The Underwater Demolition Teams, the SEALs and the dive watches they trusted from the Second World War onward are why we built the Trident 300 the way we did. The photographs on this page are US Navy photographs from the National Archives. The specs on this page are ours, published, and the thing to check: 300 m, solar quartz, sapphire, 316L steel, bezel.

Is it quartz or automatic?

Solar-Powered Japanese Quartz. No winding, no nightly charging, no battery swap. Light does the work. Hours, minutes and seconds, plus the bezel.

Does it have a date?

No. Time only: hours, minutes, seconds, plus the bezel. Those men needed elapsed time, not a calendar, and a date window is one more thing to go wrong in the water. If you need day and date, look at the Field Watch 41 instead.

How big does it wear?

46mm (1.81 in) across and 16mm (0.63 in) thick, in 316L stainless steel. It is the largest watch in the Ironway line and wears like a tool watch. The 24mm strap is 260mm (10.2 in) long and interchangeable between rubber and steel.

Shipping, returns and warranty, in plain terms?

Free shipping. 30 days to return it for a full refund or exchange. The movement, hands and dial are covered by a 2-year warranty, worldwide. Questions go to support@ironway.com, answered within 24 to 48 hours, Monday to Friday.
