The ranking

Five dive watches. One without a catch.

The scores are his. The facts under each watch are published specs and US prices, checked October 2026.

Rolex Submariner on an Oyster bracelet
8 / 10Rolex Submariner

300 m. Sapphire crystal. Automatic, about 70 hours of reserve. Oyster bracelet.

The catch: about $10,050 list, for the same depth rating and crystal.

Casio MDV-10 on a black resin strap
7 / 10Casio MDV-10

50 m. Mineral glass. Battery quartz. Resin strap.

The catch: a 50 m rating, so a pool watch rather than a dive watch, and a battery to replace. About $86 at a US retailer.

Seiko Prospex Samurai with a blue dial on a steel bracelet
6 / 10Seiko Prospex Samurai

200 m. Hardlex crystal. Automatic, about 41 hours of reserve. Steel bracelet.

The catch: $500 for Hardlex instead of sapphire, and it stops when you leave it in the drawer.

Apple Watch in graphite stainless steel on a grey sport band
3 / 10Apple Watch Series 11

50 m, not for scuba. Rechargeable, up to 24 hours. Ion-X glass. Apple band system.

The catch: a charger every night, and a depth rating for the pool, not the dive. From $399.

Ironway Trident 300, black dial, black rubber strap
10 / 10Ironway Trident 300

300 m. Sapphire crystal. Solar quartz, no battery to change. 316L steel. Rubber or steel, interchangeable.

Why 10 out of 10

It does one job, and does it every single time.

  • No name to protect

You pay for the spec, not the name on the dial. $0 today instead of $0.

  • No battery to charge

Solar-Powered Japanese Quartz. Daylight or a desk lamp keeps it running. No puck, no cable, no battery swap.

  • No case to open

No battery means no caseback opened every few years for a swap. The watch stays sealed the way it left the factory.

  • Steel case, clean dial

316L stainless steel. Three hands and a bezel. No date window, no sub-dials, nothing you do not need in the water.

  • Built to hold up in the dark

Luminous hands and markers you read at a glance, on deck or in the water, day or night.

In the dark

Readable when the deck lights are off

Luminous hands and markers, a unidirectional bezel with a 60-minute scale, and a sapphire crystal with an Anti-Reflective coating. The three things a dive watch is for, and nothing else.

Built like equipment

Every part of it has one job

Trident 300 on black rubber strap, angled, showing bezel, crown, dial and case
  1. Unidirectional rotating bezel. 60-minute elapsed time scale. Turns one way only, so a knock can never add time to a dive.
  2. Crown at 3 o'clock. Guarded by the case shoulders, so it does not catch on a cuff or a sleeve.
  3. Luminous hands and markers. Broad arrow hands and a red seconds hand you can read at a glance, day or night.
  4. Solar dial. The wave-pattern dial charges the Solar-Powered Japanese Quartz movement from any light.
  5. 316L stainless steel case. 46mm (1.81 in) across, 16mm (0.63 in) thick, brushed matte. Sapphire crystal with Anti-Reflective coating on top.
  6. 24mm interchangeable strap. Rubber with a tactical buckle, or a steel bracelet with a fold-over clasp. 260mm (10.2 in) long.

Questions, answered straight

Before you tap the button

Is "10 out of 10" just marketing?

The score is one Navy SEAL's ranking of five watches, so weigh it as an opinion. The specs are not opinion. The table above lists depth rating, crystal, power, strap system and price for all five watches, from each maker's published specifications and US prices. Check them. The Trident 300 matches the Rolex on depth rating and crystal, beats the Casio and the Seiko on both, is the only one of the five with nothing to charge, wind or replace, and costs today.

Is it a real 300 meter dive watch or just marketing?

It carries a 300M (30 ATM / 1000 ft) rating, which Ironway lists as a professional dive rating, with a unidirectional 60-minute bezel, luminous hands and markers, and a sapphire crystal. A watch rating is a static pressure test, not a depth you can swim to: 5 ATM is rain and splash, 10 ATM is swimming, and the ISO 6425 dive watch standard sets 20 ATM (200 m) as the minimum for scuba. At 30 ATM the Trident 300 clears that with margin. Have it pressure-checked by a dive shop if you depend on it for working dives, as you would with any watch.

Is it quartz or automatic?

Solar-Powered Japanese Quartz. Not an automatic. That is deliberate: quartz keeps better time than a mechanical movement at this price, solar means you never open the caseback for a battery, and unlike an automatic it does not stop when you leave it in a drawer for a few days.

Does it have a date?

No. Hours, minutes and seconds only. Many divers expect a date window, so we say it plainly here. The upside is a cleaner dial and one less thing to set after a flight.

Why not just buy the Casio?

The Casio MDV-10 is a reliable watch for under $100, and it scored a 7 in the ranking. The differences are checkable: the Trident 300 is rated to 300 m instead of 50 m, has a sapphire crystal instead of mineral glass, runs on solar power instead of a battery you replace, and swaps between a rubber strap and a steel bracelet on the same 24mm lugs. If those four things do not matter to you, the Casio is a fine watch.

How big does it wear?

The case is 46mm (1.81 in) across and 16mm (0.63 in) thick, the largest watch Ironway makes. The strap is 24mm wide and 260mm (10.2 in) long. It is a full-size diver with real presence. If you prefer a smaller watch, Ironway's Field Watch 38 or 41 will suit you better.

Shipping, returns and warranty, in plain terms?

Shipping is free on every order, with a tracking link by email. Orders are prepared in 1 to 3 business days and delivery to the USA and Canada takes 5 to 9 business days after that. You have 30 days from the date you receive your watch to initiate a return; it must be unused and in its original packaging, and return shipping is not covered by Ironway. The movement, hands and dial are covered by a 2-year international warranty. Questions go to support@ironway.com.
